Worried about how to protect your sterling silver from tarnish? We are here to the rescue!

All that glitters is not gold, but certainly jewellery most of the times. One of the most beautiful forms of jewelry is silver jewelry. Although a little less valuable than gold jewellery, there is a certain attractive & divine charm about silver which has compelled women to wear them to beautify their attire since ancient times. Whether your shiny silver anklets or silver jhumkas, all of the silver jewelry pieces have their own unique qualities.

Sterling silver is a beautiful and versatile metal for jewelry.  However, this popular silver jewelry material can easily lose its shine because of neglect.

Wondering how tarnishing happens? Through exposure to oxygen, which thereby causes oxidative reactions. Other reasons behind tarnishing are high humidity levels and air pollution, or sterling silver coming in contact with chemicals found in deodorant, lotions and perfumes.

As you may have noticed, the main reasons behind tarnishing have one thing in common - silver jewelry coming in contact with air. Ziploc bags are a convenient way to keep your sterling silver from tarnishing because they lock out the air. Just place the jewelry in a Ziploc bag, close it halfway and squeeze all the air out before sealing. Just be cautious that the bags you use for storing your precious jewelry don't contain abrasive materials, like Mylar or polyethylene.

After sealing your precious jewelry in plastic Ziploc bags, make sure you don’t put them in a place where there is a risk of the jewelry coming in direct contact with sunlight. Direct sunlight is not good for your jewelry, so keep it in a cool and dry area. Moreover, keeping jewelry pieces together has a great risk of the pieces rubbing each other and getting damaged due to scratches.

The tarnishing process speeds up as soon as sterling silver comes in contact with any chemically treated surfaces. So, to keep the jewelry safe, be sure they are kept away from any stained or treated surfaces. Placing a piece of chalk in your jewelry box will be of great help as chalk is a natural absorber that can absorb moisture as well as chemical residues. Also, anti-tarnish strips are anti-toxic strips that can effectively absorb agents in the air that tarnish sterling silver.

If your sterling silver jewelry has already started tarnishing, try cleaning it immediately to avoid further tarnishing. Get a polishing cloth and use it only for keeping your silver jewelry clean. If the cloth is not effective in cleaning the silver jewelry, try a silver wash. The last option is visiting a jeweler as they have special equipments that can get rid of tarnish easily.

While people suggest baking soda or toothpaste to get rid of tarnish from your sterling silver, we do not advise the same because both baking soda and toothpaste are too abrasive. You can use this method to clean other items of your jewelry, but not silver.
